Ruins of Adventure
Mornhaven's Path
This hefty tome, found in the Library of Mornhaven Tower in the Twilight Swamp, has twenty pages of thick, black persimmon wood, bound in plush otter hide. The first page bears the title “Mornhaven’s Path” written in flowing script, first in Auld Cormanthan, then in Nogese. The next eighteen pages describe a unique path of magic, one spell per page. The last page bears an active Explosive Rune.
This represents the life’s work of Mornhaven Nightstar, scion of house Nathron’dan’Luemiin, reflecting her desires to reclaim her family’s Eldren heritage and to record and preserve their wisdom for posterity, but also her unhealthy obsession with her beloved Otter familiar.

Mornhaven’s Ottershape
(Alteration)
Level: 1st
Range: 0
Components: V, S, M
Duration: special
Casting Time: 1
Area of Effect: caster
Saving Throw: none
This invocation causes the caster to instantly transform into a normal-sized Otter. The wizard retains his own hit points, attack rolls, and saving throws; but gains the otter’s physical modes of locomotion, senses, armor class, attack modes, and the ability to hold his breath for a number of rounds equal to his Health score. The caster retains all mental abilities, but cannot cast spells while in otter form. While in ottershape, the caster can understand and speak the language of otters and other mustelids.
When the transformation occurs, the caster’s equipment, if any, melds into the new form. The transformation lasts until the next dawn, or until dispelled. The caster cannot end the transformation prematurely. The wizard also will return to his own form if slain.
The material component for this spell is an article of clothing with a blue-checked, gingham pattern, which must be worn at the time of casting. This is not consumed by the spell.
Mornhaven’s Flaming Brand
(Alteration, Evocation)
Level: 2nd
Range: special
Components: V, S, M
Duration: Instantaneous
Casting Time: 1 round
Area of Effect: Special
Saving Throw: half
Mornhaven’s Blazing Brand draws on sources of fire near the caster to sculpt a temporary wizard mark in the air. This will extinguish all the fire sources near the wizard as he casts the spell, within a 10’ radius. This spell takes a full round to cast, during which time streamers of fire concentrate on the caster, forming his Wizard Mark in the air in front of him.
After the spell is complete, the blazing brand explodes outward in a 30-ft. cone of white-hot fire. Anyone caught within the cone takes damage based on the available fire at the start of the spell. For every candle-sized light source, the spell will deal 1d4+1 points of damage, to a maximum of 10d4+10. A torch counts as 2 candles, and a larger fire counts as 5 candles. Targets in the cone may make save vs. spell for half damage. Anything flammable directly in front of the brand and within 10’ will also ignite. This includes clothes, wood, etc.
Mornhaven’s Spraint For The Haint
(Alteration, Necromancy)
Level: 2nd
Range: 0
Components: V, S, M
Duration: 1 round per caster level
Casting Time: 2
Area of Effect: caster
Saving Throw: none
This spell allows the caster to target Undead with “Person” affecting spells as if they were normal, living humanoids for the duration. Thus the caster could target a Ghoul with Hold Person or a mummy with Charm Person. This will also bypass the undead’s normal immunity to charm, sleep, and hold effects, so long as the spell used is one that would otherwise target a “Person”.
The material component for this spell is a bit of otter dung (fresh or dried), which is rubbed around the caster’s eyes.
Mornhaven’s Analyze Ancestry
(Divination, Chronomancy)
Level: 3rd
Range: touch
Components: V, S, M
Duration: Instantaneous
Casting Time: 8 hours
Area of Effect: Creature touched
Saving Throw: Negates
This complicated spell reveals the target creature’s complete genealogy, going back ten generations. The caster learns the name, race, and other identifying characteristics of each of the individual’s ancestors.
The material components for this spell are rare herbs and oils worth 100 gp.
Mornhaven’s Otterdamerung
(Conjuration)
Level: 4th
Range: 10 yards per level
Components: V, S, M
Duration: 1 turn
Casting Time: 1 round
Area of Effect: 50 to 300 otters
Saving Throw: none
At the completion of the spell, 1d6 x50 normal otters appear anywhere within range and do the caster’s bidding for one turn before melting away into puddles of river-water. The otters can understand the caster’s speech and will attempt to obey his commands to the best of their abilities, even to the point of risking their own lives.
The material component is 200gp worth of colorful shells, which vanish along with the otters at the spell’s end.
Mornhaven’s Recitation of Lineage
(Enchantment)
Level: 6th
Range: 20 feet
Components: V, M
Duration: 1 round per level
Casting Time: 1 round
Area of Effect: All allies within range
Saving Throw: Negates
A favorite of Mornhaven Nightstar, last scion of house Nathron’dan’Luemiin, because of her family’s emphasis on lineage. When casting this spell, the caster recites his illustrious, infamous, or even unremarkable heritage to bolster allies and give enemies pause.
On completion of the spell, all allies within a 20-ft. radius receive a bonus equal to +1 per three caster levels to attack rolls, damage rolls, saving throws, and proficiency checks for 1 round per level of the caster. Likewise, enemies in the area suffer an equal penalty on their own attack rolls, damage rolls, saving throws, and proficiency checks unless they succeed on a save vs. spells.
At any time before the end of the spell’s duration, the caster may end the spell to force an immediate morale check from all enemies that failed their initial saving throw, with the same -1 per three levels penalty. Regardless of the result of the morale check, this ends the spell for all allies and foes.
The material component is a detailed family tree for the caster, illuminated and printed on the finest vellum (minimum 50gp value).
Mornhaven’s Binding
(Alteration, Necromancy)
Level: 9th
Range: touch
Components: V, S, M
Duration: Permanent
Casting Time: 9
Area of Effect: Creature touched
Saving Throw: Negates
This spell binds a single creature into a prepared book, sustaining it in suspended animation and filling the book with its experience and knowledge. The tome weighs 10 pounds and has one page for every day of the subject’s life. The cover and binding transform to reflect the subject’s appearance, interests, and tastes. Every thought and memory—including those the target may have forgotten long ago—are perfectly transcribed within the enchanted pages, penned in excruciating detail in the language that the creature was thinking or speaking in when the event occurred. If a memory includes dialogue in a language the subject didn’t understand, that dialogue is reproduced phonetically, and must be translated by a reader who knows that language. Any alterations to a subject’s memories (such as by a Modify Memory spell) appear in a subtly different script; recognizable by anyone with the Forgery proficiency.
Spells that modify or remove text—such as erase or secret page—also affect the target’s memory if they persist after its release. Modify memory can be used to repair any changes to its original state, or alter the accounts recorded within the book. A creature imprisoned by Mornhaven’s Binding automatically fails any saving throws against effects to change or modify its memories.
A target bound by this spell can be freed by only by a Freedom or Wish. Polymorph any Object restores the target’s normal form for 24 hours. Mornhaven’s Binding makes the imprisoning tome supernaturally durable (+5 on all item saving throws, 10 hp per HD the imprisoned creature had). Destroying the tome immediately slays the creature imprisoned within.
The material component for this spell is a specially prepared tome bound in precious metals and treated with rare oils, worth at least 1,000 gp.
