Overview: Of all the nations and regions in the Shining South, Halruaa is the largest and mightiest and most reclusive. Magic permeates every layer of society and insinuates itself in every facet of life. Halruaa is a land of floating castles, flying ships, and magical furnaces. Merchants from this place buy and sell magical items from around Faerûn and, at least according to rumor, far beyond. The wizards here have an unusual affinity for magic of all sorts and cannot be matched for their knowledge of such things. Even the warriors of Halruaa are knowledgeable in the art of magic.

Description: The people of Halruaa are noted for flashy dress and richly ornamented costumes. Feathers, sequins, and gleaming gems dominate their clothing and accessories. The appearance of the clothing is usually amplified by spells, causing any gold embroidery to shine brilliantly, already bright colors to appear more vibrant, and gems to sparkle and twinkle. If it were not for the fact that they are among the most powerful spellcasters on the planet, they might easily be dismissed as nothing more than fops.

Role-Playing: Wizards from this nation are very much of the opinion that magic can overcome any obstacle and solve any problem and the warriors of Halruaa are as fascinated with magic as the wizards. They are always seeking out new spells and magical effects. They are suspicious of foreigners, who they feel are out to steal their magic. On the other hand, they are very polite and courteous, almost as if they were obeying a complex set of rituals.

Special Abilities:

  • So potent is the magic of the Halruaan that few can resist their spells. Anyone making a saving throw to escape a spell cast by a Halruaan does so with a -4 penalty. If a Halruaan must make a saving throw to escape the effects of a magical spell, he receives a +4 bonus.

Special Disadvantages:

  • Halruaans are seldom strong, agile, or resilient. They suffer a -2 penalty to their starting Muscle, Balance, and Fitness scores. Due to their magical inclinations, a character of Halruaa may never have exceptional Stamina or Muscle scores (maximum score of 18).
